Getting Started
So, you've decided you would like an affordable web presence on the
Internet. Here are a few questions you might want to
consider before we discuss your plans for your web
site.
- Do you know of a web site similar to your intended site,
perhaps the site of a competitor or professional colleague? What
do you like and dislike about that site?
- What search terms would you use to find sites
similar to the one you'd like to develop?
- What types of visitors do you want to attract to your web site. New
clients? Current customers? Investors? The general public?
- Can you state the purpose of your web site in one
or two sentences?
- What action do
you want your visitor to take after visiting your web site?
- Draw up a rough outline of the information you want to include
on your site. What
might the menus look like on your home page? Thinking in
terms of a simple, six-page web site for starters is sometimes helpful.
- Collect a few basic site assets: a sheet of your letterhead bearing
your logo, your business card, brochures, reports
and newsletters
that contain information you may want to use. What colors predominate?
What colors do you feel best reflect your values?
- If you have a logo, what does it suggest about your company? High-tech?
People-friendly? Environmentally green? Young and fun?
A long history of quality service? How will your
logo set the color scheme and tone for your web site?
- Take a sheet of paper and brainstorm words that reflect the
professional image and
values
you want to convey.
- Make a folder (either on your computer desktop, or a manila folder,
or both) where you can begin to collect documents,
art work, and photos
for your web site.
- Collect any biographical and contact information you want to include
for your About Us and Contact
Us pages, which are usually the
first pages to go online.
- When you are ready to discuss your web site,
email
me, and we can arrange a time to discuss your needs. I offer a free
initial consultation to discuss your web site's purpose, audience, content,
and look and feel.
